Joe Considine was the lover of Norma Bates.
In his early forties, Considine began a relationship with Norman Bates' mother, Norma, and she insisted that Norman refer to him as "Uncle Joe." Considine built the Bates Motel with Norma and made plans to marry her. Following this and an incident in which Norman walked in on the couple having sex, he became jealous.
As a result, Norman poisoned the couple with strychnine and posed the deaths as a murder-suicide perpetrated by Norma. He wrote a suicide note in her handwriting, claiming her reasons being a pregnancy as well as Considine's wife on the West Coast.
Behind the scenes
In the films, Considine's name was changed to Chet Rudolph, but his role remained largely the same.
